Ask The Dirk: Lost sessions with the IDEA page

Did you know that the IDEA website is designed to keep the session alive until you log off? or at least one minute of no connection from the client is detected.

In fact you can encounter log-offs from IDEA but there is no such thing like an automatic log off.

Usually your session will live for days, if not weeks, when there is no problem with the network.

The websites heartbeat signal does take care of this.

If the session timeout message appears or your session is set back to to the login screen, this mean your Browser has not sent a heartbeat signal to the IDEA Web page and/or network connection to the IDEA server was interrupted, hence why the session was eventually terminated by the Microsoft IIS which hosts the IDEA webpage.

The underlying reason for this behaviour can probably be explained by a setting in/for your local network or internet connection.

If you experience this situation frequently please check your Network or System for the following possible sources for this behaviour:

  • Do you have a Firewall/Security application installed in your Network that does deep packet inspection and could identify the heartbeat as a thread.

  • Do you encounter this behaviour while you are connected via W-LAN and being in an area where the signal is very low?
  • Does your PC enter an idle state after a while where the network is stopped, going into some kind of hibernation? – Mind the network problem can located on either or both site – your IDEA server and/or your client PC/MAC.
  • Is your browser fully updated?

Note: You can disable the heartbeat check in the “Settings” Menu, Check on  “Manage system settings” \  Disable session testing.

In addition, there is a browser setting (in Chrome) that could also influence the page behaviour in this regard.

The function to suspend a page in chrome can be switched off for a defined page here (settings/performance/”Always keep these sites active”):
