Who is Captain Clive?

If you’ve taken an IDEA Academy course, you’ve already met him. If you’ve opened the newest version of IDEA YACHT, you may have spoken to him. As CLIVE AI arrives inside IDEA, it’s time to properly introduce the captain behind the hat.

Captain Clive has had quite a career. He started out as a name in our software, became the face of IDEA Academy, led the crew through every course we’ve built, and now sits in the IDEA YACHT toolbar ready to answer your questions. Here’s how a demo user became one of the most familiar faces in the IDEA Universe.

Where it all began: a demo user

Before he ever wore epaulettes, Clive was a login. Since 2018, anyone who has tried the public IDEA YACHT demo has signed in as him: the username on the demo screen is simply “clive captain”. Through that account, prospective clients have explored maintenance, stock and every other screen crews use day to day.

Where it started: signing in to the public IDEA YACHT demo as “clive captain”.

Look him up in the demo vessel’s Crew & Guest Database and the origin of his title becomes clear. His first name is Clive and his last name is, quite literally, Captain.

Nobody planned any of this. Our development team needed a name for a demo user and picked one at random, the same way they fill test data with whatever placeholder comes to mind. A silly meme standing in for a gasket photo is all part of a normal day in the IDEA dev team. Most of those placeholders are quietly replaced. Clive stuck around.

For five years before anyone drew his face, Clive was already the person “using” IDEA in front of new customers. That made him the natural choice when we needed a guide. Nobody knew their way around IDEA quite like Clive.

June 2023: Captain Clive takes command of the Academy

IDEA AcademyIDEA Academy

In June 2023, the IDEA Academy brand guidelines introduced Captain Clive as IDEA’s mascot, complete with the IDEA Academy epaulette. The Academy was created as IDEA’s official training certification: a home for video lessons and resources that teach yachting professionals our yacht management software, and help them strengthen their CV and skill set along the way.

Clive was given a full persona to match. He’s written to be warm, nurturing, educational and welcoming, with the experience of a true superyacht expert. He doesn’t lecture. He shows you the way, one step at a time.

August 2024: the full Academy sets sail

In August 2024, IDEA Academy grew into a complete course platform. The first course, the IDEA YACHT Basic Course, covered the essentials, from the Dashboard to Maintenance and Storage Areas, with Clive and his crew guiding learners through every module. Our invitation was simple: join Captain Clive and his crew, become an IDEA expert and get things First Time Right.

The Academy has kept growing since. Today, learners can choose from courses built around the way each department works on board:

Foundation

IDEA YACHT Basic

The starting point for every user: Dashboard, Maintenance, Storage Areas and more.

Departments

Interior, Deck and Engineer

Role-specific courses for the interior, deck and engineering teams, each introduced by Clive and a member of his crew.

Under 400GT

IDEA GT

A dedicated course for IDEA GT, designed for vessels under 400GT.

Every course is online and self-paced, so crew can learn between seasons or shifts. Members track their progress and download certificates to the IDEA Standard, each one signed by Captain Clive himself, while group packages let managers see how every department is progressing.

2026: Clive comes aboard IDEA

CLIVECLIVE

This year, Clive has taken on his biggest role yet. As IDEA celebrates 25 years, it was Captain Clive who narrated our anniversary timeline. And now he has moved from teaching IDEA to working inside it.

CLIVE AI is the assistant built into IDEA YACHT. Open it from the captain’s hat icon in the toolbar, or press Shift + Space, and ask in plain language: what maintenance is overdue, where the oil filters are kept, or what the manual says about changing the generator coolant. CLIVE answers from your vessel’s own IDEA data, links back to the record so you can check it, and builds Excel, CSV and PDF reports on request. It only sees what you can see in IDEA, and nothing changes in stock until you press Apply.

“Good morning, Captain! How can I help with your superyacht today?”

Why Clive belongs in the IDEA Universe

At IDEA, we help crews, managers and owners bring clarity to every part of yacht operations, from maintenance and safety to inventory, compliance and finance. Clive has always been part of that promise. First he showed new customers what IDEA could do, then he taught crews how to use it, and now he helps them find answers in seconds. Same captain, same warmth, and a new set of skills.
