The captain on board a yacht is ultimately responsible for the safety of the vessel, its crew, the passengers and the environment. He needs to manage a variety of tasks on a daily basis. This includes, among others, personnel management, achieving owner’s objectives, planning and overviewing overhauls and refits, ensuring legislative and regulatory compliance, and navigational planning.
Directly positioned below the captain, the first officer has to take over not only administrative responsibilities, but also deck department responsibilities.
The chief engineer on board a luxury superyacht manages all aspects of engine room operations including safety, maintenance, repairs and inventory along with management of the engineering team on larger vessels.
As head of the interior department, the Interior Manager coordinates all operations related to guests and is responsible for the ship’s interior care. These tasks among others include coordinating guest activities, organise the interior department, replenish inventory and discuss meal plans and activities.
The purser on board a yacht is responsible for the financial management and administration of the vessel under the captain’s direction including HR and payroll. This role may also direct the overall management of the interior department depending on the size and needs of the vessel.
